The true horror of the Siege of Speer lies in the brutal reality of war that claimed Altan's life after Rin had graduated from Sinegard Academy. While spies and corruption existed within the academy, this specific tragedy was born of active warfare rather than a staged ambush by traitorous allies during field exercises. When Altan used his Phoenix powers to ignite the Mugen fleet's oil reserves, Rin's grief snapped something inside her. She invoked the Phoenix—a spirit of fire so ancient and malevolent that its awakening signaled the end of the old world order for everyone involved.

The rain at Zekai tasted like iron and ash. Rin stood amidst the churned mud, her uniform torn and stained with blood that wasn't entirely hers. The screams had stopped, replaced by a heavy, suffocating silence broken only by the wet cough of the dying. She looked down at the body of her friend, the one who had shared her rations and her secrets, now still and cold. The Gao soldiers advanced, their faces masks of cruel triumph, expecting another easy victory over the academy's children. But Rin did not run. She closed her eyes, reaching into the dark void within her chest where a dragon slept. When she opened them again, they were no longer human; they burned with the cold fire of a shen.

The event begins as a routine field exercise for Nankow Academy students near Zekai, intended to test their tactical skills in a controlled environment. The situation deteriorates rapidly when Gao imperial forces launch a surprise ambush, aided by traitors within the student group who have been bribed or coerced into revealing their positions. As the superior numbers and experience of the enemy overwhelm the young cadets, panic ensues, leading to a massacre rather than a battle. Rin, witnessing the brutal murder of her best friend, undergoes a psychological break. In a moment of sheer desperation and rage, she summons a shen, an ancient spirit of war that grants immense power at a terrible cost. The awakening of this entity turns the tide instantly; Rin unleashes devastating magical attacks that decimate the Gao forces and inadvertently harm her own allies in the chaos. The aftermath is catastrophic. While the immediate threat is neutralized, the victory comes at the price of many lives and the loss of Rin's innocence. The battle marks the end of her time as a student and the beginning of her path as a warlord who will stop at nothing to destroy the Gao Empire, regardless of the moral cost.
